Matcha Bamboo Scoop (Chashaku) – tradition made of bamboo

The Chashaku is the elegant tool for precise matcha dosing. This traditional scoop made of fine natural bamboo has been used in Japan for centuries to transfer matcha powder stylishly and without waste from the tea caddy into the bowl.

Its characteristic curved shape allows you to scoop exactly the ideal amount of matcha. Plastic-free, lightweight and with a pleasant feel – a timeless detail of your matcha preparation.

Why a Chashaku instead of a normal spoon?

At first glance a Chashaku seems to be just a small spoon – but in fact it is a thoughtful tool that lends precision and aesthetics to every matcha preparation.

  • Exact dosing · standard measure of approx. 1 g per scoop
  • Gentle scooping · the bamboo touches the fine powder gently
  • No metallic taste · natural bamboo stays flavour-neutral
  • Plastic-free & sustainable · 100% natural and biodegradable
  • Stylish & aesthetic · a timeless element of the tea ceremony
  • Vegan & durable · ready to use for years with good care

How to use the Chashaku correctly

Use is very simple – three steps for the perfect matcha dose:

Care instructions

With good care, a Chashaku is ready to use for years:

  • Clean dry · a soft cloth or brush is usually enough
  • If needed · rinse briefly with lukewarm water, dry immediately
  • No dishwasher · natural bamboo is sensitive
  • Dry & ventilated store – not in closed containers

Tip: scoop dry powder

Make sure to dip the Chashaku only into dry matcha powder. Moisture makes the powder clump and can damage the bamboo over time.

Complete your matcha ritual

The Chashaku is part of a trio – matcha bowl, bamboo whisk and bamboo scoop. Here's how to complete it:

Frequently asked questions about the Chashaku

A Chashaku is designed as a standard measure for matcha: one scoop equals approx. 1 g of matcha powder. This is ideal for one portion of Usucha. For Koicha (strong tea) you use 3–4 scoops.

Three reasons: precision (an exact standard measure), gentleness (gentle scooping without compacting the fine powder) and aesthetics (a traditional element of the tea ceremony). In addition, bamboo is flavour-neutral – metal could affect the fine aroma.

Best cleaned only dry with a soft cloth or brush. For heavier soiling, rinse briefly with lukewarm water and dry immediately. No dishwasher, no washing-up liquid – natural bamboo is sensitive.

With good care, a Chashaku lasts for years. It is important to keep it dry and not store it in moisture. Over time the bamboo takes on a warm patina – a lovely sign of long use.

Not technically essential – but it helps. Exact dosing becomes easier, the powder is treated gently, and the matcha ritual gains authenticity. In addition, a Chashaku is an inexpensive investment (often < €5) for a long-lasting tool.
