What types of black tea are there?
Black tea is grown in various regions around the world — each region brings its own character. Here are the most important classics you'll find in our range:

Answers about black tea
What distinguishes black tea from green and oolong tea?
The main difference is oxidation: black tea is fully oxidised (fermented) after harvest — hence the dark colour and the robust, malty aroma. Green tea, by contrast, is heated immediately and remains unoxidised. Oolong sits in between, at 10–80 % oxidation. More in our green tea guide.
How is black tea prepared?
Heat the water to 95–100 °C, use 1 tsp per 250 ml and steep for 3–5 minutes. Steeping longer can make the tea bitter (tannins leaching out). It can be enjoyed plain, with milk or lemon, with honey or sugar.
How much caffeine does black tea contain?
Black tea contains around 40–60 mg of caffeine per cup (250 ml) — more than green tea (20–30 mg) and oolong (30–50 mg), but less than coffee (80–100 mg). A longer steeping time increases the caffeine content.
What is the difference between Assam, Ceylon and Darjeeling?
Assam (India): robust, malty, ideal with milk — the classic breakfast tea. Darjeeling (India, Himalayan foothills): lighter, with a muscatel note — the "champagne of teas". Ceylon (Sri Lanka): aromatic, medium-strong — versatile in use.
What are Earl Grey and Lapsang Souchong?
Earl Grey is classic black tea flavoured with bergamot oil — fresh and citrusy in aroma. Lapsang Souchong is a Chinese black tea traditionally dried over pinewood smoke — hence its characteristic smoky character.
