Use – how to use the Chasen correctly
With the right technique, creamy matcha foam succeeds in under a minute:
1. Prepare
Before use, briefly soak the whisk in warm water so that the prongs soften and do not break.
2. Whisk
Pour 60–80 ml of water (70–80 °C) over the matcha and whisk in quick W or M movements whisk.
3. Enjoy
Once a fine crown of foam has formed, enjoy the matcha straight away – pure or as a latte.

Frequently asked questions about the bamboo whisk
After use, rinse with warm water and let it dry on a bamboo whisk holder. This preserves the shape of the prongs. Please no dishwasher, no washing-up liquid and no strong cleaners – natural bamboo is sensitive.
With good care, a Chasen lasts several months of intensive use. With a matching whisk holder, the lifespan increases significantly. When the prongs begin to break, it is time for a new one.
A traditional Chasen is carved from a single piece of bamboo whose tip is split into finely divided prongs. More prongs = finer foam. With approx. 100 prongs, our Chasen is ideal for both Usucha (light matcha) and Koicha (strong matcha).
A holder is not mandatory, but recommended. It supports the prongs while drying and prevents them from collapsing or warping. A good holder can significantly extend the life of your Chasen.
Usucha (薄茶, "thin tea") is the everyday, lighter preparation with approx. 1–2 g of matcha to 60–80 ml of water. Koicha (濃茶, "thick tea") is the ceremonial, more intense variant with approx. 4 g of matcha to 30–40 ml of water. Both succeed with our Chasen.
For the classic preparation we recommend our BIO Japan Matcha Ceremonial. For everyday use our BIO Japan Matcha Daily is excellent.
